WhatsApp Call: Recently, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) under the Ministry of Communications has issued a warning to smartphone users regarding calls coming from some phone numbers.

Actually, calls are made using these phone numbers and they are threatened. In such a situation, you need to be careful with them. According to the Telecom Ministry, in these calls, users are called in the name of DoT and are told that their mobile number will be disconnected.

Users are being threatened

These callers threaten mobile users by saying that their numbers are being misused for some illegal activities. This modus operandi is similar to the way users are threatened in cyber crime related to CBI, where criminals claim to be CBI officers and claim that some illegal package has been received in their name.

‘Dangerous’ WhatsApp numbers DoT has also issued advisories about WhatsApp calls from mobile numbers of foreign origin. These numbers: like +92-xxxxxxxxxx — call people in the guise of government officials and dupe them.

The Ministry of Telecommunications has warned mobile users that cyber criminals try to threaten/steal personal information through such calls to commit cybercrime/financial fraud.

It further states that DoT does not authorize anyone to make such calls on its behalf and has advised people to be cautious and not share any information on receiving such calls.

How to report such fraud, where?

DoT has advised citizens to report such fraudulent communications on the ‘I-Report Suspected Fraud Communications’ facility of Sanchar Sathi portal ( www.sancharsathi.gov.in ). Such proactive reporting helps DoT to prevent misuse of telecom resources for cyber crime, financial fraud, etc.

Besides, citizens can also check mobile connections in their name on the ‘Know Your Mobile Connections’ facility of Sanchar Sathi portal ( www.sancharsathi.gov.in ) and report any mobile connection that they have not taken or is not required.

DoT has also advised citizens to report cyber crime helpline number 1930 or www.cybercrime.gov.in in case they become victims of cyber crime or financial fraud.
